I'm beginning to question my abilities as an artist and a writer. I'm sure all people who have a talent goes through something similar. I feel as though I've had too much positive support and not enough criticism, because when it comes right down to it -- I never deliver the goods.
I didn't even get into the quarter-finals for a TV script competition. After working out a year's worth of storylines, a rich history for the characters, workshopping the script with objective people and doing a read-through with local actors, we submitted the pilot to two tv pilot competitions. The first competition labelled us as "talky" with not enough at stake. Today, we got an e-mail telling us we didn't even place in the second competition.
Some of the most critical people I know loved it. I've grown to love it more than anything I've written (I'm notorious for hating anything I've done about a month after it's finished). It just makes me think that while I may have multiple talents in many different things, I'm just "passable" in all of them.
I am the best of the whiny bitches, though.
If anybody feels like reading a 60-some page pilot script about a writer-turned teacher forced to reevaluate his desire to escape small town life when strange events lead to his taking on the mantles of amateur detective and high school drama club director ... feel free to contact me.

Who knows? Somethings just don't stick. You never know what might sell. And heck, other times it's all about timing. I've got a notebook filled with rejections. Little bit frustrating...
