I like the gates. I wish I could go visit NYC right now. It got people talking, and walking, and questioning, and curious again. Was it waste? By definition, all art is a waste. It's nonfunctional. This piece was a larger bit of nonfunctionality than some. Countries waste money. Corporations waste money. Heck, even poor people waste money.
Does the photograph of the graphitti ("Art?") now make the gates ironic? So now it has meaning? So now it's art? Boring art doesn't do this. So yes, hate it. Love it. How cool is that?

I think a lot of people get overly obsessive about analyzing art. It is what it is, and either you approach it for what it is, or not. That's my thought.
