I couldn't sleep much last night, and ended up waking up way too early. It was raining out, so I went out to my porch, opened all the windows, and just lay back and relaxed. Life has been so hectic lately, and it's been such a dry summer, I haven't had the chance in some time to just relax and enjoy a nice, rainy morning. I really love the rain.

The sounds. The tapping, as it hits the roof, the windows. The pitter/patter, as it falls through the leaves. The strange hushes and rushes as the wind picks up and dies down. It's whisper, as the intensity of it rises and falls as the rain grows harder, then lighter. And sometimes there's thunder. Distant, rumbles you almost feel more than hear. Sudden, intense, powerful, humbling bangs that rumble the ground and can even make one jump a little. Long, intense rolling roars that can leave one awestruck.

The sights. The spasmodic twitching of leaves as it strikes them. The splashing and ripples in puddles. The drops themselves as they fall. And sometimes lighting. Subtle flashes that light the clouds. Bright bolts which arc through the gray sky, beautiful, powerful. Brilliant strikes that for a fraction of a second can turn the black of the night, white.

The smells, feels, even tastes. The air just feels different, more alive. The earthy, soothing smells that rise as it falls, sometimes there's even almost a taste in the air. The actual physical sensations that come with the sound of thunder. Even the feel of drops on my clothing, my hair, my skin. The sharp, jarring chill when it's a cold rain, the soothing tickle when it's not so cold, or coming as a break from a heat wave..

It's really amazing how strong a sensory experience a little rainstorm, much less a thunderstorm can bring. Too often nowadays, I just think of rain as a hindrance, an inconvenience, something to leave me soaked as I slog through a work day. I miss when I was a kid, and could just enjoy it, every time I had the chance. At least I had, once again, such an opportunity this morning, to experience the pleasure of it, and rekindle the memory.
