So we found a place to live in NY - it's in Inwood, at the very tip of manhattan, between two big parks. Things are finally going better! I'm glad.

I've been thinking about why the prospect of a brain tumor is so particularly scary. For me, a person who has spent pretty much her entire life studying and learning, getting a PhD, etc., I've reached the point where I think my brain is basically all I have to offer. It would be like a model as confronted by a disfiguring skin disease.

My dad...

Cancer is just plain scary in any form, but I feel a particular horror about brain tumors myself.

I'm glad they were able to cut it out and I hope very much that there will be no more of it.

As for cats in sinks, your dogs can at least fit in the tub, right?
nullarelicta:
Well, we don't get in the sink with the cats, either.

Is anyone planning to go to the Black Sun festival in New Haven, CT (July 28-30)?
nullarelicta:
First I'd heard of it! Can't commit to a three-day festival, but... Hmm.
nullarelicta:
Only problem is the expense even of a one-day ticket, which makes it unlikely. Rats.

The following weekend Gogol Bordello is playing at an event in northern VT; we thought about going up and camping and seeing them, but it's part of a weekend festival that doesn't even have the day-ticket option, so I imagine we won't be doing that, either.

We both need to finish our dissertations so we can get us some of them plentiful academic jobs you hear about and then have lots of, uh, money and free time.

Instead of more updates on my bad mood, which is probably apparent anyway, I offer new exciting tales of spinning and knitting:

So, I decided to actually make something with some hand-dyed, handspun yarn. It's based on the "voodoo wrist warmer" pattern here on knitty, made with a version of my "rhododendron" colorway, in this case made into a self-striping DK yarn.

Fiber to...

Ode to safety

Oh thank you Mr/Ms/Rev TSA person, for breaking the zipper on my suitcase. I feel oh so very much safer to know that you, honorable one, a person whose job it is to open and close suitcases, can not re-zip my suitcase without catching a huge clump of plastic bag in the zipper, thus rendering it broken.

And thanks too for...

That's most of the reason I never check a bag when I travel. I can pack an insane amount of stuff into a carry-on.
nullarelicta:
Ugh.

Well, welcome back, at any rate.

stubborn tumor, stubborn dad

So my dad's operation, originally anticipated at 3-4 hrs, took over 10. A very long wait in a very dreary hospital waiting room. It was a fibrous, veinous, "well fed" calcified tumor. Stubborn tumor.

The night after the operation, semi-unconscious, with a giant bandage on head, myriad tubes, monitors, and immobilized/hands tied down, my dad managed to spit out the breathing...

I'm glad everything went well. My sister's was supposed to be eight hours, and ended up being twelve. It was a pretty harrowing day. I hope both you and your dad are getting lots of rest.
nullarelicta:
I'm very happy that he's doing well. Hooray for stubborness well directed!

I seem to have survived yet another birthday!

So what?

Uncertain
