I had a really good night last night. Jackie and I did go to the Balcony. We sat through about three hours of bands that we didn't neccessarily care for.

I didn't really matter, because we just spent the night making googely eyes at each other.

And then I saw Pat, who I interned for at the City Paper. Pat's a cool guy.

And then it was time for Mirah to play, so Jackie and I moved up near the stage.

Halfway through the first song, Mirah stopped. A lot of people in the bar weren't using their "indoor" voices, and she was finding it hard to concentrate. She askes them if maybe they wouldn't mind being a little more quiet. She said, "Once you get past the illusion of the stage and the lights and the sound system, I'm really just a person trying to talk to you. And when someone's trying to talk to you, it's at least polite to pretend you're listening and to not talk when they're talking to you."

But, the chatterers just kept chattering, chattering, chattering.

And Mirah said, "Okay, since this doesn't seem to be working, how about I move the microphone to the back of the stage, and the people who want to hear me can move closer, up on the stage, and be able to hear me through the monitors."

So about 20 people sat down around her on the stage of the Balcony. She didn't play for very long, because she was still having trouble hearing herself, but what she played was beautiful.
