had a great weekend with Phil. His flight threatened to start things off horribly though. When i got to the airport his plane was 50min late, then an hour, then an hour and a half. Then at 9:45pm they told us the flight had been rerouted to Salt Lake City, where they landed, refueled, and flew back to Vail; finally landing at 11:50pm.
I was bummed because i had set up a great dinner for his arrival. when we were kids and i'd sleep at his house we'd make ourselves these gnarly frozen veal parmesan dinners. it was like what we always ate before we got older and started going out for sushi. so i decided to make that as a celebration of our 20th year of friendship and not seeing each other in 4. (P.S. i can't believe i can say that i've known someone for 20 years)
so we saved dinner for friday. when we woke up friday, there was fresh snow and a cloudless sunny day for my first day of riding in 26 days and Phil's first day in 7 years(and his first time on a real mountain). He was super nervous and i was a little worried about my achiliies. He picked it up pretty quick, just a little nervous about the speed and how long the runs are at Vail. But he didn't fall too much, and kept up pretty well.
saturday was another beautiful day. we took it super mellow getting on the hill at about noon. we only rode for about 90 minutes because Phil was just beat. I'm sure his legs were super sore and the altitude was killing him. We made our mandatory sushi run at Nozawa and talked about my upcoming trip to Japan (he went there a few years ago)
sunday i had to work early and he cabbed to the airport.
its an amazing feeling when you've known someone for so long that even after not seeing each other for 4 years there was nothing awkward, just too brothers coming back together.
we agreed that that length of time cannot be allowed to pass again. i'm hoping to be in NYC in the fall to see him.
