@ Human Elements Tokyo, Aoyama Loop
[L-R] Freddy An0mFlux (my main MC), MC Cardz (Tokyo's finest), Makoto (*that* Makoto), Ben (probably my best friend), Hiro from 7NiNE, some chick named Asami who was on my nuts.
Yeah we had some serious fun at this party. I'm also amazingly looking forward to that Human Elements OLD SKOOL party, with Dx, Inza, and Velocity B2B Keita (both of my crews playing at the same club, sort of rare).
But anyway, aside from the usual fun, I really went to this party to handle the politicals, and there's always a good chick to dude ratio at HE. The primary strike is at the main guest DJ Aki from ES9, the biggest DJ in Japan aside from Makoto. Having him in Makoto's house is an interesting move, although I'm almost completely considering that it was entirely political.
Tokyo is very political. Though, I've heard conflicting stories about me, and to whether or not I fall into a lot of these politics. It's got many crews in between, but once you really start trying to make it to DJ the major parties (DBS, or 06S). Some people have said, since I'm already in the crews (two, more than many), I fall into the same politics, however, others have said since I'm a foreigner, I'm free to make any move I want.
Freddy asks me "What's your next move?"
Well, shit, play the big monthlies. I've blown the spot at every other party, time to go to Drum & Bass Sessions (DBS) at Unit, or 06S at Womb. But, politics.
The main dude behind DBS is weird., his name is Kamba and he's a music journalist and did many things to bring DNB in Tokyo since the early 90s and was probably the first to bring people like Goldie Doc Scott Grooverider blah blah blah. Mad respect to him. But dude is just, weird, when you meet him, and just look at him, you'd know.
Most of the active Soi DJs get booked to play there, unfortunately I've been passed over.
"Did you meet him?"
Yeah. I've been introduced to him a few times. Once by Dx (Soi crew boss), but more properly by Toshi from Re:wind/Remited (respected Drum & Bass promoter in Tokyo).
"Did you email him?"
Yeah. A few times. Sent him a new mix each time. Nothin back.
"Is it because you played at Womb?"
I don't think he knows I did. I know he hates Womb, but I wasn't even booked for 06S.
See how this Japan shit is fucking complicated.
So anyway, Aki from 06S was booked to my the night for my other crew in April. I met him, and everything and he was cool to me, probably because I'm the new resident for a bunch of his main DJs for his night. I was happy the dude even knew me, not only that, knew where I lived (which happens to be his hometown). Of course, he played his usual DJ Aki really-fucking-mainstream-dancefloor-drum&bass-that-I-really-don't-like, but hey, man can hype a crowd. And if I see bouncing titties, I'm happy.
Brings us to Human Elements, had to go. Makoto was interested in doing a joint Bassdrive thing with the Human Elements podcast, and the club is really small so it'd be real easy to find Aki's 6'7" godzilla-with-braids-ass and work my hustle with him. Plus I've been spending most of my time at rare groove/funk nights, ain't seen my dnb posse in a minute.
Run into Aki again. This time he says, he wants to do the show. He figures, well hey when I go to visit the fam, I'll roll through to your house and play. I said that's cool. Granted, no, I don't like his style, but is it big in Japan, I guess.
I hit up Freddy, "I think I'm closer to getting a 06S spot than DBS"
"I think you're right."
Man, I just want to see GUISE in the big giant lights. Think it could happen?
