We should all get to know Death. Someday.

His pleasantness is underrated
Thanks to his polite equality
Let me take a minute to describe him
So if he comes upon you
You'll do the polite thing
And try to get to know him better.

Death's left hand is Regret.
According to some
His polite pleasantness
Comes from the fact that we put it there.
According to others, we put it there still
But on a person-to-person basis
And each for their own reasons.
Either way, it sits there, and we see it.

Death's right hand is Mystery.
According to some
His polite pleasantness
Comes from the fact that we put it there.
It was in our hearts
But we thought about a lot of things
And decided that Mystery was better off here.
Now, I think a lot of people would like it back.
Either way, it sits there, and we see it.

The countenance of Death
Lacks the facility
For either condescending smile
Or tragedy-induced frown
His bone is polished to such a sheen
That if you see a smile on his face
Or a tragic frown on his chin
More than likely,
You put it there yourself.

Of all these gifts we've given Death;
A handful of Regret;
A fistful of Mystery;
And a face of dramatic masks;
We should be wary
For in giving Death gifts
He feels obliged to give back.

If you ever have the chance to meet Death
Do the polite thing
And get to know him.
Leave Regret at home
And save Mystery for your own heart.
And if you'd like him to smile for you
Make sure when he meets you
You greet him with a smile.

We should all get to know Death.
Someday.
