It's always nice to start with some Paul Weller, Broken stones. I have always liked bands like Rod Stewarts Faces, but I had never heard about Paul till I got into Oasis. Wonder wall was my Favourite song at the time, and when I found out that Paul Weller was a god to them I wondered what I had been missing. I have a girlfriend who told me that he sounds like john Mayer, or whatever that beach bums name is! I was this close to throttling her, but Iborrowed her my albums to cleanse those misguided thoughts.
The Verve is next, gotta love the music from overseas! This is an amazing band ruined by the ego of the front man, they were so good till his solo rift with the band. I'm not a big Ashcroft fan, and I blame the stones for it all.I think this is the point where I decided that I had had enough ofthe stones. The melodies of the Verve are catchy and haunting, Ashcroft being an amazing face, and central focus of the band.
Now for Oasis, there is no other "ROCK" band out there that can hold a candle to these guys, now before you shrug this off as some fan boy English wannabe drivel, I will make a point. Noel is a talented writer, with a knack for taking the everyday and turning it into something to remember. He has worked with Paul Weller, and really is there anymore to be said. He has kept his integrity and patience when it came to the public temper tantrums, and threats of his less talented brother. Noel is theheart of this band, the other boys keep Liamas focused as an egotist can be. Liam is pure testosterone bad ass! This fucker kicked a German cop in the chest in a drunken rage, had his tooth smashed out of his face and wanted more. When I talk about a 'Rock' band I refer to the whole package, music notencompassing the whole. There is womanizing, I make no apologies, drugs, booze and straight up punch out's with fans and the establishment. These guys have done it all, and with style. It was always a question if they would burn up in their own brilliance, or fade away into obscurity. It hurts me to say that it's looking like the latter! What ever happened to the self respecting destructive power of the Sex pistols.
This leads me onto another English band, and one that may be able to place the 'Rock' back into Rockers. The Libertines are expected to do great things. It's just a matter of getting over the undeserved ego they've picked up before the first Album. They've got the womanizing, boozing anddrugs down like seasoned rock vets, but the music isa little lacking. This isn't really a bad thing, rock is about so much more then the music, I believe it's central on attitude, and these boys have it. If they never make another Album they will have attained the status and title of Rock Stars, but fall short of Rock Band.
There are a great many other bands from the U.K. worth mentioning, Happy Mondays, Sex pistols, Clash, Joy Division ect. ect. ect. It's always nice to start with some Paul Weller, but as far as I'm concerned, these areall that matter to me, and it's all about me!
Oh Canada...who's in here... I support Canadian music I really do.. Hot hot heat? not bad! Going places? nowhere important! Sloan? please, they are at best a copy of a good American geek band. Although they have spruced up the look for a U.K. feel, they still stink, it may just be lack of shampoo. The Trews...don't get me started... repeated, same old same old...blarg.
Now that I am finished lambasting the 'Canadian' music, I'll get started. #1) a broken up band called Duotang, these guys were fucking Modstars! Two dudes who rocked out like no-ones business, silky lyrics and svelte sounds made up this Winnipeg band. I could go on and on about Winnipeg and how if I never went back I'd be happy, but I would miss out on some of the best music in Canada! The Lead singer/guitar from this band has gone on to Novelero, but before I do, I want to mention the bassist. #2) The bassist was in a band called Transonic, another good Mod band from Winnipeg. They weren't great, but they had the right feel for what they were making. The vocalist sounds like a playboy sex kitten, and the music is catchy as hell. #3) Novelero... what can be said about this band... they are good, damn good! Destined for Rock Godship? Probably not. Do they need it? Fuck no, these guys are quite simply one of the most lively act's you'll see. The lead from Duotang is a little more focused with this band and you can tell right off. There is a chemistry that only the winter months in the 'Peg' can supply.#4)Lust and infatuation leads me to mention Biff Naked, she has got to be one of the hottest'Rock' goddesses out there! The music is give or take with a fewdecent tracks, but as faras fucking stunning rock sex appeal, she is arguably top of the pops!On that note, there is the Rockabilly Horrorpops, the lead singer is aninked up fox who plays the stand up base. This band knows how to get the crowd hot for more. Theyplay west/east? coastRockabilly punk complemented with tat covered go-go girls....... thisturned out to bethe best show I have seensince Rocket from the crypt two years ago.The metric's lead lady is dead foxy, the music has....sounds so lame, but has Re-Moded the Mod sound. ( whatever that means! ) And they way she moves on stage....sheesh, I remember seeing her at the Republic ( I think it was just before they turned it into Tequila?) is there a sexier move than her little sway and hair flip....
I first heard Blond redhead a few years back on Aussie radio, at first I was a little put off with the vocals, which is odd, because there is nothing which gets me going harder than a little cutie ripping her cords out. They grew on me, a stolen track here and there and I was convinced. I saw them open for Interpol and have been infatuated ever since. I saw them in Seattle, and I must say I found some amazing disks there! I picked up the Dresden dolls, another album I had heard on triple j (Aussie radio) a few years back, and I must say that the more I listen the more I like it. I'll admit that one of the reasons I got it was because of the piano playing hottie, but have been really impressed since. The Thermals, good Montreal based band, another hub for great music. Sons and Daughters, The Revolutionary Hydra, The Features and the Long Winters, all of which I have been very happy with.
Other Triple J gems I've heard and don't mind humpin the legs of are; Franz Ferdinand, fuckingA cool, but I will cut it at that....I don't need another Killers heartbreak. The Hives and Jet. I remember being told about Jet when they first released in Aus, I'll never forget what she said about ass ugly rockers that have the whole balls out, in your face attitude thing down! So good...until they got played here to the point where a minor cringe creeps up every time some jackass drivesdown "the Red Mile' with it blaring out of his shit brown duster. The Libertines, enough said about them. Louis XIV 'True Love is Blind' damn! These boys are destined for something great! They are a banddripping with sexand attitude! They have the vintage rocker look down, music soon to follow. Scissor Sisters, again triple J delivered. T.V. on the radio.. this is a group few know of, and fewer would recognize. Good shit, worth a listen, may leave you wanting more!
Interpol... do I need to say anything? other than apologize for calling them a copy of some other Canadian band 'not' worth mentioning! This was a band brought to me by someone I have great respect for, and at first wondered if she wasn't going deaf...turns out I was a close minded music snob.
So that being said, other gems she has lovingly brought to my attention, usually with a sledgehammer, would be the Ravonettes, Block Party, the 22-20's, Death from Above and The Decemberists. I have to mention that the Decemberists are amazing! Has a whole east cost sound to it, the mariners revenge is simply one of the coolest little songs I've heard in a long time. The Lyrics are the linchpin to this band, I haven't come across anything like this since Pulp (one of my all time Favourite bands)!
