In the town of Pattani, in the 'deep' south of Thailand, a region of rice, small villages, and terrorism. Elements in the Muslim majority province don't like being part of Thailand and believe that if they break away and become part of Malaysia they will be better treated---yeah, right. Screwed either way imo.
The capital town of Pattani has about 40k people, and a number of soldiers and police wandering through the city, at checkpoints along the roads, and peoplepeople just like you and me. Other than the terrorism, which kills ~600 people a year, bombs, car bombs, shootings (including my hotel), it is like any sleepy, rural Thai town. I will be here a few days and then check out the two other Muslim towns even further south, on the Malay border.
One thing, if you do visit a region infested with terrorism, you can get great hotel deals. Be advised.

While I'm on a tight budget, cheap hotel rates due to terrrorism doesn't do anything for me, lol.
