Kayaking, or not... adventure:
- So... my bro called and said he could take me to drop my car and bring me back to the start point of the Farmington River (creek...) . As we were driving, he commented that there didn't appear to be enough water, I laughed and told him it would be fine, I only needed three inches! Bad choice, he was right. The first hour, in the pond where I started was fine. For the next six hours, there wasn't enough water for me to be there, I spent most of the time tripping over slippery rocks, dragging the boat behind me. I'm not sure which was the most fun part: the five or six times I smashed my ankles, shins or elbows, the five times I completely fell in the water, the hoards of voracious mosquitos (I wasn't going to stop, so I didn't bring any bug spray...), the two years of life I scraped off the bottom of the boat, or the trashed ends of my walking stick paddles. I finally parked the boat 1.3 miles from the car, and ran the rest of the way to retrieve it. Oh boy, what fun. I'm glad you weren't there, I'd much rather fuck up an adventure on my own. Overall adventure rating: suck!
- But there were two good parts: Wildlife sightings and a food adventure:
- Wildlife sightings:I came upon a wading deer, under an overhanging tree in the pond. She looked at me for a minute, then started to stomp her left foot, and snort at me (a la the threatening beaver, I have such a way with wildlife...)! She did this three times, and then ran off, snorting all the way. She was still snorting as she loped away off into the woods! Angry woman! I saw another one, later on, running along side the river. One beaver, threatening of course, and one muskrat. There were lots of crayfish in the river, they were fun to play with when I wasn't falling down or running away from the skeeters. I thought it that, they appeared light colored to me, while hanging out on a dark river bottom, making it easy to spot them. You'd think they would be dark, for survival purposes. Go figure. No herons today.
- Food adventure: So seeing as I was most of the way to New Boston, I decided to sup at the New Boston Inn, which I've wanted to do for years, but just never did. It was very nice. Small, very friendly, decent menu (lots of fish), Berkshire prices. I ate in the tiny pub because I was still wet up to my nipples! They had great beer, AND James Bond on the TV - ya gotta love that!
- So I went home and had a nice shower, washed all the blood and dried bug parts off me, and snuggled off to bed in my cozy flannel sheets. Imagine if I was in the Amazon: I'd still have 200 miles to go, I would've had to deal with pirhanas and pythons, in addition to the rocks, I'd have to sleep with the skeeters, and there wouldn't even be a beer at the end of the day!
ARRR!!!
rodan:
LOL - that sounds like fun (in a sorta wild-lifey masochistic way wink )...
