So, I was sitting here thinking about all the injustice going on in the world. All of the people that are killed each day in the middle east, and other places, just because they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Bombs going off everywhere. People that have no money, no food, no hope. Whole countries that are disease ridden. Then I start to feel like a huge piece of shit because I have it made in sunny so. cal. I complain about the little things - gotta lose 5 lbs...gotta fold my clothes. I bet they would love to have 5 extra lbs. on them, and love having clothes that needed to be put away. Then I get mad because I think of all the money the gov. could use to help these people, but hey, if it's not profitable to them, then why should they care? I get so sad sometimes when I think about these things, that I start to cry. Then I think, why aren't I helping them, why aren't there a bunch of us helping them? What can we do to help? I've donated money to the hungry, but who knows if they really get it. I've given clothes away, but I think there is so much more I could be doing to help. I don't want to be one of the ones who lives my quiet little happy selfish life, and when glancing through all the devestation in the World newspaper, just reads the first few lines and then decides since it doesn't apply to me, I'll just skip to the classifieds. Wouldn't you want someone to help you if you were in their shoes?

well, not the usual sg journal entry. surprising and refreshing.
in my humble opinion, your guilt for what you have can't help anyone, but you can transform it into the impetus to do more. there are many things to which you can contribute your money and/or time that allow you to see the results directly. of the various organizations with which i am involved, i have 2 favorites i'd recommend. the christian children's fund is great cuz you can donate to people in other countries and know your money is getting to them. i sponsor 2 little girls in india and they are so amazing and beautiful and are truly grateful. we write letters to each other and they send me pictures and drawings. so cute. and if the christian thing throws you off a bit, don't worry they don't proselytize or anything. other than the name, it's approach is very secular.
and if you want an even more direct connection, big brothers big sisters is another wonderful organization. and it's not overly time-consuming like most people assume. i'm always happy to find the time to hang with my little sis, and we get together a lot more than the minimum they request. also, i check out the financial statements of all organizations before i donate to them, and these are both very reputable and well-run. anyway, i hope this helps in some way and you find what you're looking for.
