Not As Expected...
The "first official date" was very strange in that it was nothing like what i expected. I had planned to take her out to a pricey italian joint and spend most of the night nervously trying to fill in awkward silences, like one does on a first date. Instead, she was on call that night and didn't want to run out on a schmancy dinner if she got called up. So, we went to T.G.I. McFrydigan's. Not how i wanted the first date to go, but it was me and her at dinner, which was just fine by me. All that worrying about conversation and the list of "go-to's" i had memorized for when the inevitable silence came were all for naught. There was nary a break in conversation unless we were both sipping our JESUS FUCKING CHRIST THAT'S STRONG! Long Islands. A perfect dinner, a perfect date.
Back at her place, after a few more drinks and hanging out, we went out for a smoke, and then came the dreaded words, "I guess I should say something..." 'Oh, boy', I thought, 'this was inevtable, dummy, so don't get upset.' She said how wonderful i was and that she just needed a little time to get over her last bf. I told her she deserved no less, and it was time to start living for herself, no hard feelings. I was sad, but not as upset as i thought i'd be. It's the benefit of self doubt, i suppose. That constant littany of "you know this isn't gonna happen, right?" had braced me for such an outcome. All the better, though, hm? "that which doesn't kill us..", right? RIGHT?!? Bartender! A beer, a shot, and two more of each, STAT!
A week and a half later, i get a text from her. Hello, going to a football game, thanks for the wine, we should get together soon. Wait, what was that last bit? Does that...? Could she...? <cue Hallelujah> So, that was almost three weeks ago, and things have progressed to a point that's none of your business. It turns out she actually meant "I need a little time". Who would have ever thought that someone saying that would be sincere about it? But, like I said before, she is one of the most wonderful people you'd lever meet, sincerity being the least of her amazing qualities.
I'd like to close by saying that my signif. other is better than yours, followed by a nanny-nanny-boo-boo. Tah tah!
