Edited to add ... last night I spoke at a city council meeting to oppose a new ordinance making it illegal to carry certain dangerous materials to demonstrations and rallies.
Essentially the wooden/metal/pvc planks and/or poles used for large signs and banners are going to be declared dangerous weapons, and carrying something of that size will be illegal.

I brought an American flag on a flagpole and told the council I'd be proud to be arrested for violating the new law. The flagpole would be illegal under the new law, and I know they didn't expect to be accused of being against flag waving. The gallery roared with cheers. It was really cool. The ordinance has been put on hold for further legal research.

Tomorrow I have to go back east to a funeral and deal with the freezing cold. Just a reminder ... skin cancer can kill you. These are always terrible events, but I love the way my Irish family handles them. Everyone will be terribly sad, but we'll also make a point of enjoying the company of our friends who are still alive. Someday when I die, I hope my friends throw one hell of a party.
