Reason #453 why San Francisco rules:

Just when I thought I had been everywhere and seen everything cool, along came the "first annual video game music showcase" or something like that. It took place in the middle of the Tenderlon, in a 5th story room called the Drum Machine Museum. (what the hell? a place like that actually exists?). The attendees were video game music programmers (including the former lead singer for Information Society, now working for EA, the guys who did the music for Halo, etc) and indie kids. Nerds and hipsters make an intersting combination; it's like a clusterfuck of all the different types of people that I hang out with!
There were 3 bands playing; first was a guy who headed Sega's music department, then the band 8-Bit Weapon played electro-synth versions of old 8 bit classic songs using hacked gameboys as instruments. Rad! The last band, Freezepop, instantly became my new favorite synthpop band. At one point they had a fan play a video game that they provided music for, as they played songs from the game live., with the crowd erupting in applause and screams when he beat the level.
Seriously, stuff like this, that I just kind of luck into or discover by accident, just makes me think that, if just for a brief period, everything is right in the world.
