Could it be that Chan Marshall isn't a mere mortal like the rest of us, but rather some sort of deity? Whatever the answer, she left me spellbound and mesmerized last night.
I knew that she's not just any other artist. What I didn't know, is just how powerful she is. And that's saying a lot.

When I got the album You Are Free a couple of years ago, one song immediately stood out. When I heard Good Woman, I came apart at the seams and fell to pieces. For the longest time, I couldn't listen to the album, for fear of what that song would do to me. It was just too close to home, too near the bone.
It is playing now. My vision is blurred, but I'm all right They are cleansing tears, healing tears. Maybe the person in the audience last night who shouted out "You have healing powers" to Chan told more truth that I imagined at the time.

Cat Power and The Memphis Rhythm Band played to a sold out Ancienne Belgique in Brussels yesterday. What I saw there, I cannot being to put into words. So much beauty, so much passion, so much craftsmanship, guided and inspired by the unique talent that is Chan Marshall.
Sure, I could try to describe it, but it would be as futile as trying to paint the perfect sunrise. You just can't do it justice. No matter how great the painting, it can never compare to actually seeing it, living it.
And anyway, I'm no painter.
