A buddy of mine who's helped me out recently has been painting a place for his landlord. I guess he decided to start up a little painting business on the side.

I seriously suggest reading Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood.

A very intelligent book. Really takes Orwellian speculative fiction to a new level.
