I hate washing machines.

Back story - when I was 12, I broke my back. I've spent every day since in at least some pain. It's at the point where unless it seriously hurts, I barely acknowledge the owie.

OK, so, on to the tale. A few weeks ago, My old washing machine started to act up, even more than usual. To the point where if the water level selector isn't dead on where it should be, the washer will overflow, and just keep going until someone stops it. Kinda like a douchey 13 year old - "Well, you didn't specifically say not to, so..."

So, we replaced it with a newer washer. The "new" washer came from a friend who's tenant killed himself after lighting his apartment on fire. Some things survived the fire, like the washer. The garage being the main storage area, getting the old washer out and the new one in meant heaving them on a hand truck, up 2 steps into the family room, up a step into the kitchen, up a step into the entry way, out the door, and down 3 steps to the front walkway. The new one went in the same way.

Got it set up, ran it, and turned it off scant seconds into the first load. Hole in the bottom of the drum. Water went into the washer, and poured directly onto the floor.

Shit.

So, wet-ish clothes out. Unhook the washer. onto the hand truck. Up the steps, up the step, up the step, down the steps. Old washer back on the hand truck. Up the steps, down the step, down the stap, down the steps, back into the garage.

Hooked up, runs, but still not very well.

At this point, my back is in, without exaggeration, the most pain it's been in since I broke it to begin with. Spend the next week or so taking more motrin and/or vicodin than I have since my knee surgeries.

A week or so later, we get a newer washer off of Craigslist. $60. Works fine, but the guy's moving to Washington, and his new places comes with a washer.

So, hand truck, old washer out, new one in, more pain pills because the poor back is strained even more.

a week and a half later (AKA this past Sunday) the motor that spins the drum FREEZES. No belt, of course, so I can't fix it. Frozen motor, makes a bad noise and smell.

Once again, new washer on the cart, up and down a number of steps, old washer on the cart, up and down the steps, and back in pace. Guy is in Washington now, so we can't get our money back. We have the crappy old washer back in place, and are trying to see who can come take the other two washers. Dumps, recyclers, whoever. We don't need old washers in front of the house. Make us look even white-trashier than we are.

My back is in constant pain. My knee (5 operations, and probably arthritis) is a swollen, throbbing mess. And we're back to having to rinse the clothes at least twice because the washer is so old and ineffective.
