hopefully tomorrow i can go see one in person and seriously consider moving to AT&T...

Texting has been very popular where the cost of actually calling was prohibitive since it's usually a flat rate per message. It's also popular with pay-as-you-go type phone setup such as is very popular in Europe (where people have cell phone that have no credit in them since call received are billed to the caller, not the receiver.)
In the US and Canada where the average phone plan is something like 400 minutes + evening and week-end unlimited + voice mail + a few extras for like 30-40$ a month, things are somewhat different. Texting is cool, cute or funny, not cheaper.
