I recently took a job that does not guarantee me work, pays $4/hr less than I was making before, and offers no insurance benefits. It will allow me to further explore my field of study, and help me get into grad school.

My partner recently took a job that does not guarantee work, and pays about $3/hr less than he was making before. It will allow him to further explore his field of study and will likely lead to a better job when he is finished with his schooling.

Needless to say, we are quite broke. Rent is due today & we are about $40 short. There will be no money left over for bills and other necessities.

These were necessary career moves for the both of us.

I am going into teaching special education.

He is going into emergency services and management.

Our situation is not unique. There are plenty of other folks who are in the same boat. We all work daily to better ourselves in that we might someday make a difference in our communities. Somewhere along the line somebody decided that, in addition to skyrocketing tuition costs, hundreds of hours of required (for school) community service hours and more for homework/studying, that we are not worthy of living wages.

I am not complaining. Just ranting.

But I do want y'all to remember this:

I work with your children.

He works with your elderly.

We are not the only ones.

Next time you wonder why there are no quality teachers, please keep this in mind.

Next time you wonder why there was no ambulance available when you or a loved one needed it, keep this in mind.

When I Complete my MAt, I will have done more than suffered through all of my homework. I will have learned far more than any course curriculum ever offered.

kiss
