I started playing Quake 4... I'm not 100% committed yet, but I've given myself a test run the last few days and I'm reasonably optimistic. I've put in... maybe 13 hours over the last 3 days. I'm playing one one map and one map only right now. I think I will practice maps until I know them so well I automatically know where my opponent is.
I've played mostly against bots up until now. I've seen some improvement in my performance against them, but it's difficult to know if that's me getting better or if it's me taking greater advantage of their not-insignificant glitches. I hopped in a duel server today just to see how I'd do against a real player... I got worked like nobody's business. It was painful. Something like 43:1 and 27:3 in the two rounds I played.
I learned a few things though. I need to get better about switching weapons, and for god's sake I need to work on my aim. A lot. However, I do know the map pretty well. My psychic abilities need work, but aiming is really the big thing... and I can't think of anything to improve that except playing, and losing, for a few hundred more hours. Maybe 1000. In 100 or 200 more hours I may be eligible to try a new map.
I wish I knew people closer to my skill level to practice against... playing against better players is good, and I want that, but I think I would probably improve more if I have the chance to stay alive more than 5 seconds after I respawn. It's going to be a while before I challenge the likes of Toxic or Stermy to a duel... but Stermy's cute enough I think I could handle losing to him. :o

This is why FPS games should have handicaps, like in golf.

yeah, for weapon switching you should assign keys near your "wasd" setup that you aren't using. key things like the rocket launcher and the railgun. it takes a while to get used to but it helps out. good luck.
