“Yacob came out alone to the meadow and trapsed out here into the deep woods until I came upon him only a few hundred yards from this place. I was cordially invited to attend the sentencing of my beloved brother for his theft and his insane heresies, which means I was tracked down and punched into submission by my...

Jacqueline stopped for a minute and looked at Felecia until Felecia turned her eyes away and found an inconspicuous spot of earth to stare at instead. “You’re bright, girl. You know where the rest of this goes. Never figured the towering monster/mother of your youth for a coward, did you? The kind of feckless wretch that let’s others do...

Felecia was fourteen and staring head long into another winter spent in the cave, another time of cold conjoined isolation with Jacqueline’s declining presence. The time spent in Phillip’s house seemed like a fading memory then and all her years spent in Rotary house felt like a distant dream that belonged to some other, younger and more hopeful girl....

"Politically speaking, the murder of John Brown would be an uncorrectable sin. It would create in the Union a latent fissure that would in the long run dislocate it. Brown's agony might perhaps consolidate slavery in Virginia, but it would certainly shake the whole American democracy. You save your shame, but you kill your glory. Morally speaking, it seems a part of the human light...

“It wants me to hurt the people at Rotary house, it wants me to destroy that place. Is that what it wanted you to do?”
Jacqueline kept on walking behind Felecia, the old woman started doing that back at the beach after the boat and had continued doing so ever since. Felecia wound up leading them to the meadow...
