Devoured...
"The howl pierced the night, there was that sense of hunger, that sense of urgency sure, but there was something more, something worse. A baby wasn't just calling for food or for changing, something was very, very wrong."
"Rachel woke up reaching out, clasping at the tiny, chubby toes of her son, in response he gurgled once and shifted a bit. The cry wasn't his."
"She managed to get her glasses and her slippers on and got headed halfway downstairs before the real commotion started. She found Zeke and one of his no good friends coming in through the backdoor of the kitchen. They had to park the car out front but they felt the need to walk and come around through the back door of the house."
"The blood told her stories she didn't wan't answers to. This wasn't the first time Zeke or one of his friends came in with a knife or a bullet wound. Only, neither of them were pressing any wounds or trying to hide away from her stony gaze."
"There was no yelling, no demands that she do her part as a wife or a woman in the order. Both of them were bloody, dripping with it but neither of them looked wounded as they offered up the screeching bother."
"The baby was soaked in blood, so thoroughly that it was hard at first to tell how old it was and once that was confirmed, Rachel had nothing but disgust to offer her husband or his friend."
"Zeke held out his blood soaked red, right hand and shook his head. "I swear to God, we had nothing to do with this. We found her this way, in the alley behind the bywater. Is there anything you can do?"
