i just started playing FFX-2, and i'm not really too keen on the active battle portion (which the whole beginning battles are) but you can switch it to wait, and it slows down the pace a bit. The battles are a little too fast paced for me right now, but i'm sure i'll fall into the groove soon. The opening movie though was pretty sweet. you get to see rikku actually kick someone's ass. she's also actually useful in this game too.
