By now all of you know that she has passed away. I didn't know about this until yesterday and I wanted to share.

Wanda Jeanine Smith, 75, of Modesto passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, in Capitola.

Born in Watsonville, she was the eighth of nine children of William Jacob Dufur and Rosalie Rippy Dufur. Her brothers and sisters all died before her. She attended Watsonville schools and graduated from Watsonville High School in 1949, excelling in music, math and physical education.

Jeanine, as she was known to her family and friends, met the love of her life, Donald Smith, on a fishing trip near Sonora. While on their first date, which was to Lake Tahoe, a storm came up and they got to ride along on a patrol boat on the lake. They were married in the Corralitos Grange in 1949 and moved to Oakdale for a brief time. Jeanine and Don built a home in Placerville and had four children. In 1961 the family moved to Salinas, purchased a lot off Echo Valley Road in Prunedale and built what was to be their home for many years.

Mrs. Smith was a school bus driver for 11 years with the North Monterey County Unified School District. After retiring, the couple moved to Modesto in 1985 and in 1987, Don, her husband of nearly 40 years, passed away. She became active in a widow's support group where she not only dealt with her own loss but helped many others with theirs. Before Don died, she enjoyed traveling in their travel trailer sightseeing, especially to the Oregon coast. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and punch embroidery. She rarely missed her "show," "Days of Our Lives," and loved playing bingo at Pacific Coast manor where she was residing at the time of her death. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints and was a member of the Capitola Ward. She will be remembered as a kind, strong, loving and gentle spirit.

She is survived by her son, Gary Smith of Santee; daughter, Rebecca Cramer of Santa Cruz; and daughter, Linda Taylor of Marysville. Her son, Mark Smith, died in 1997. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
