In fact, during the second voyage of Christopher Columbus, the indigenous people of Espanola told him about the black people who reached the island before him. They showed spears left by African Muslims to Columbus as evidence of their claims.
Makes me wonder about how a serious researcher can imply that Indonesia is in Africa.
