Why is it that at every show I go to to, right before the main band starts there's always a girl and her friend that push their way through the already packed crowd to the front, stopping right in front of someone who's been there all night? I always let people through, stupidly assuming that they went to the bathroom or something and are making their way back to their friends. But no, they stop right in front of me, or right in front of the person next to me, and proceed to do one of the following:

  • Talk to each other all night with their heads together, further obstructing the view.

  • Dance with their hands in the air, further obstructing the view.

  • Dance in a way that results in their purse or elbows banging into people over and over.

  • Cram into such a small spot where people can barely move anyway that their big hair has nowhere to go but in my mouth. Ew!

I'm all for people dancing and having a good time, but I'm also big on manners. Maybe I'm too English in that respect. I hate that I get to a show early and sit through the opening band that 99% of the time I'm not into, only to end up a lot farther away than I started, while these people just show up late and muscle their way to the front. Is it wrong to get upset? It happens all the time (twice in the last week), so you'd think I'd be used to it by now and just accept it, but it really gets on my nerves.

(Edited to add that if there's a space to stand, go ahead and take it. That's fine. What pisses me off is when the place is packed, and I move out of my way as best as I can to let someone through, and then they just take my spot)

I guess I see it in the same vein as those drivers that aren't content to wait their turn in slowish moving traffic, and keep cutting over to the right parking lane, only to have to cut back in one car ahead. They get to move ahead one car at a time, while slowing things down for the rest of us who have to slow down to let them back in. It's as if they think they're entitled to inconvenience everyone else as long as they're a little better off. Or maybe they think that we really don't need to get where we're going as much as they do.

Have people always been this selfish, or is it a recent development from the past couple decades or so that's snowballing out of control? Sorry for the totally negative entry. I'm totally on my way to becoming a crazy anti-social cat lady.

To end on a positive note though, despite this I thoroughly enjoyed the show last night. There was a dude next to me dressed up as a king, complete with a crown, ruffled shirt, tight pants and boots. And of course a cellphone with a bright blue LCD on his olde belt. I don't know why, but it was amusing.

TGIF!
