i am now completely obsessed with twitter.

follow me here: http://www.twitter.com/xeper7

i am certain this is one of the 7 signs of the zombie apocalyse.

i have avoided all socail networking sites (save for a very few) this one inculded.
for a number of reasons. i am now a slow convert and see the merit.
i still avoid face book like the plague though. but i will get into that perhaps later.

still, even though i am nearly constantly researching *something* i am still only begining to learn how to use social media and i have some hang ups about it. this is reflected in terms of privacy and narcissism as well as the quality of *real* life versus a virtual one. just because we have all this fancy shit now doesnt mean we know how to use it. or for that matter if we should.

since i have a reasonably active web presence, i also savor what little anonymity i have left.

what ive learned about twitter is that its surprizingly challenging to use this little app effectively but many
people do it. i am still in the learning curve here so i am reading all i can about tips and techniques.

why i like twitter is because i can post relevant or interesting information in tiny bite size chunks wich seems to suit me very well. also its (to me) like the ultimate news aggregator. i can pick and choose what companies, ceos, museums, photographers, tech news, you name it. its all in tiny streaming messages 24/7. this is very helpful also for keeping track of all types of information i want to know about but am constantly forgetting that i want to know about. it keeps it current and in my face.

theres also the random cool information wich i love.

an example of this:

Why People Love Twitter

The usefulness of Twitter is not readily as obvious to some people as Facebook; although it may be more addictive once you get the hang of Tweeting; you get more immediate responses and it seems to live somewhere between the worlds of email, instant messaging and blogging. Twitter encourages constant linking out to anywhere and, in that respect, is more analogous to a pure search engine; another way to find people and content all over the Net.

Twitter has quickly built brand awareness and a loyal following, especially among the technically adept; bloggers, online marketers, evangelists, basically anyone with something to promote seem to find Twitter extremely valuable.

When asked why they love Twitter, users say like I can ask a question and get an instantaneous response. They crave the ability to tap into the collective consciousness of others on the network, bouncing ideas off others with whom they would otherwise have no means of connecting. Twitter addicts claim its like the old fashioned water cooler, where people can gather to shoot the breeze on whatever topic is on their minds. Twitter is like a communications stream you dive into for an invigorating swim.

* Easy to navigate and update, link to and promote anything
* Reach far beyond your inner circle of friends
* One feed pools all users; anyone can follow anyone else unless blocked
* Pure communication tool, rapid responsiveness
* You dont have to be logged in to get updates; you can just use an RSS reader
* Very interactive, extensible messaging platform with open APIs
* Many other applications being developed (Twitterific, Summize, Twhirl, etc.)
* Potential SMS text messaging revenue from wireless networks (although Twitter states they are not currently getting any cut)
* Potential future advertising and/or enterprise subscription-based revenue streams
* With its thin overhead, Twitter is probably more scalable than Facebook, giving it a cost advantage

one reason i *really* like twitter is that it is also the great equalizer.
*everyone* (75 million last i heard but i could be wrong) there is limited to 140 characters.
because it is so compact, messages and information are also condensed to the most essential aspects. this makes me happy from the deluge of overly intimate feeling (imo) on facebook.

what do you think of twitter?

I resisted Twitter for a long time. Created a profile but hardly ever touched it for a couple of years or so. Forgot my login. Finally caved. I'm still fairly sporadic with it, but it is nice to have a place where you can just quickly toss things out into the ether. There are often cool things that come in from the folks I follow, and it is also useful to keep up with someone you know in offline life. I'm not exactly a Twitter zealot, but I will continue using it for the foreseeable future. smile
