if anyone has an opportunity to see the neo futurists in chicago (i think there's an nyc group, too) i highly reccomend it. they do a show called 'too much light makes the baby go blind.' its beautiful, democratic theater where the group attempts to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes -daunting, to be sure. the audience decides the order of the plays, and much hilarity ensues.

the reason i bring them up is simple. about 5 years ago, they did a play about 'the idea of you.' i mentioned this to twwly recently, as it was related to a bit in her journal, and i've been thinking about it obsessively ever since. premise is very simple. it addresses the difference between the reality of the people you know and your perception of their reality.

i've been thinking about this idea in the context of my current and past relationships and breaking them down into times i've dated people, and times i've merely dated the the parts of them that i wanted to date. why do this? apparently i love to torture myself. looking at my own history, it seems as though i tend to date the potential i see in people rather than the versions of them that walk around every day. sadly, it seems that i'm doing that now. well, not sadly.... but something like that.

we are all works in progress, at least those of us who wish to evolve and progress. personally, i find it exciting to be close to poeple who are actively striving to realize the potential that they know they have. nine times out of ten, you're not going to find this in an astrophysicist or a vascular surgeon - that kind of accademic accomplishment is painfully mundane when its pitted against a waitress who's really a painter or a musician who teaches others to play in an attempt to fund their own talent.

potential is sexy. potential is a turn-on. like spanish fly, baby. sometimes our relationships and inspirations don't come from this time and place. sometimes, in my life, they come from our faith in the future of inspired souls. in a time when i seem to lose faith in something new on an almost daily basis, i keep getting out of bed each day just to look in on the lives of those inspired souls that lift me up and remind me that there is still a place for people who wish to create beauty in a world bent on destroying it.

i think i'm gonna pick up the phone and call potential. see if she wants to come over and let me take a goof long look at the future. sometimes, i get really lucky and get to hold the future in my arms, waking up with their hair in our mouths.

yup- that, kids, is what cautious optimism sounds like at 2 am. anybody else need a cigarette?

Your comments about the amount of CD's/Vinyl you own made me feel as if I had found a kindred spirit.
I am also in music retail (have been for years) and own a ridiculous amount of music.
Woot!
