Sohmer had been bugging me to read Ex Machina for months, and as the eighth volume had just arrived in the store, I settled down to get into the series. In 3 days, I plowed through all eight volumes of this incredible series.
Set in a post 9/11 New York, Ex Machina tells the story of The Big Apples latest Mayor, Mitchell Hundred. It has all the colorful characters and political posturing of a story thats driven by issues and politics, with one big exception. Mitchell Hundred is the worlds only superhero.
After failing to stop the first plane from hitting the World Trade Center on 9/11, Mitchell hangs up his alter-ego, The Great Machine, and opts for a life of public service in the mayors chair.
Written with Vaughns trademark wit and realism, Ex Machina is as if The West Wing smashed into Smallville and ended up landing on Enniss Preacher series (minus the vampire). Its fast-paced, hard hitting and Tony Harris stellar art adds and almost psychadelic feeling to the story. The best part is the fact that Mitchell Hundred is easy to identify with as a guy who just wants to do whats right, and whats best for the most people that he can.
Ex Machina is the thinking mans superhero comic, filled with political commentary and drama that boils down to one man just being someone who wants to help. Volumes 1-8 are available in paperback, and two Deluxe Hardcover editions are also available.
