Their latest full-length CD was released in 2000. Many fans lost hope of a successful return after drummer Jeremiah Green left earlier this year under unclear circumstances. Rumors online were abundant that frontman Isaac Brock had put too much energy into side projects to keep the original band together, but on Friday night at the Engine Room, a line of excited fans stretched around the block as Modest Mouse got set up inside.
The Radar Brothers started off the night with a sound strangely similar to Neil Young. Vocalist Jim Putnam let his voice soar into a high-pitched melody that would make Young proud, and their music was slow and folksy. It was more than enough to get the crowd excited. Next up were the Hackensaw Boys. Their distinctively anachronistic O Brother Where Art Thou mountain music sound had most of the crowd jumping and screaming for more, though a few boos did erupt. Instruments including upright bass, banjo, harmonica, mandolin, and accordion were played skillfully by this eight man group. Both bands were crowd pleasers, but the audience was ready for the main event.
Cheers came from the crowd as Brock came onto the stage, even as he checked the equipment before beginning to play. He started with several fan favorites, and before the night was over, concertgoers got to sing along with popular songs like 3rd Planet and Wild Packs of Family Dogs. When the crowd sang, they overpowered even the speakers, which highlighted the shows only mistake Brocks microphone.
In the beginning, it kept slipping down, but that was quickly remedied. The real problem was the volume. Even after several pleas by Brock, his mic remained on low volume, and his distinctive voice was drowned out by even the soft guitar chords. The crowd seemed to ignore the problem though, or perhaps it accounted for the crowds volume as they sang along.
After a few songs, he stopped to give the crowd a few bits of his lisp-filled wisdom. Its humid down here, the Washington native proclaimed. He then proposed to pave over the entire Gulf Coast and fill it with air-conditioned buildings. The sweaty crowd applauded at the thought. During the rest of the set, various members of the Hackensaw Boys came onstage to perform with the group, but Brock was the star of the show. The climax of the entire performance came as Brock whipped himself into a frenzy, screamed into the guitar strings and played the guitar with his teeth. Needless to say, the crowd went wild.
The show as a whole was incredible, and Modest Mouse made quite a statement to nonbelievers. Their new CD is slated for September release.
