Today begins a fun little journey into not-rightness, that I like to call a FOOD BLOG...heh...anyhoo, turns out that one of the things in this world that I really have a passion for is food, especially strange food and bizarre food combinations. So I thought, every once in awhile, I would post about a new food that I have tried, what I liked about it, it's texture, what I didn't like, etc.

So since this is the inaugural food blog, I decided to start with something a little bizarre sounding food that I discovered the other day. Well, to begin, I should say that I discovered it more then a couple of days ago, when I was Stumbling on the Net and I found a result for bacon. On that page, I can't really remember what is was about, but I do remember seeing an advertisement for a bacon candy bar. Ok, this just sounds too good to be unreal, and since I didn't want to be tricked, I clicked on the link. It sent me to a page for "Vosges Haut Chocolate." Among the many sites and flavors to see, I surfed on over to what they called the "Mo's Bacon Bar" since that is what I came there for. This is what their website says about it...

Breatheengage your five senses, close your eyes and inhale deeply. Be in the present moment, notice the color of the chocolate, the glossy shine. Rub your thumb over the chocolate bar to release the aromas of smoked applewood bacon flirting with deep milk chocolate. Snap off just a tiny piece and place it in your mouth, let the lust of salt and sweet coat your tongue.

Mo's Bacon Bar: applewood smoked bacon + Alder wood smoked salt + deep milk chocolate, 41% cacao

Intrigued, I knew I had to try it...Problem was, it looked like they didn't sell it in my part of the country, meaning they had no boutique for me to purchase this odd sounding treat..so I forgot about it, and went on about my life, until yesterday..See, me and Ilectra went over to EarthFare, a kinda vegan/alternative/health store to get some supplies (why yes, we do try to eat a little healthier, thanks for asking. tongue) and what should I happen to see at the end of the check out counter near some magazines, why the very "Mo's Bacon Bar" that I had seen on the website many a day/week ago. I had to have it, and I got it. Even she said she wanted to try it.

Now, bear in mind, that I was a little apprehensive at first on trying this new food. I mean, come on, bacon and chocolate, it could either go really well or it could be really, ummm, spit it from your mouth in total disgust. Luckily, for us, it was actually not that bad. When I first bit into it, it tasted a little like the hundreds of chocolate bars that you find in alternative stores and world stores. Very rich and not at all what you get when you bite into a Hershey's. After a couple more bites, I bit into and had a piece of succulent Applewood smoked bacon. Strangely, it didn't taste bad, but you could so tell this wasn't a bac-o-bit that you find in a salad or jar. Nope, this was a mouth watering piece of honest to good smoked bacon. The kind you find in those charming country restaurants, you know the kind that makes your heart hurt the moment you put it in your mouth. Yeah, that kind of bacon. I think this is the kind of bacon Jim Gaffigan was referring to in his comedy routine.

Now, since I can't wolf down an entire bar of chocolate laced with bacon in one sitting, since that would bring the dreaded spots (for the caffeine in the chocolate, and the salt of the bacon) I decided to eat a square of the candy bar over the course of several days. Ok, here are some of the pros and cons of this particular snack treat.

Pros: Very rich chocolate. Country styled bacon pieces to be found scattered inside the bar. The way it is packaged is very pleasing to the eyes, as you can see here.

Also, I liked how Vosges imprinted their logo on the front of the chocolate bar on every other square, alternating it with an image of a lady shopper carrying a Vosges bag and wearing a sun-dress. You get three big blocks, the package says that three blocks equal 12grams of fat (which works about to be the same fat grams as a normal candy bar) and there are 2.5 servings per bar.

Cons: Even though I like this candy bar, I'm not 100% sure I would eat it all the time, since it's a bit too rich. I also noticed, or I should say, Ilectra noticed that due to the smoked bacon that is cooked into the candy bar it left a smoky taste in her mouth, almost like smoking a cigarette, but not as nasty. I didn't really notice because I was drinking a wonderful home-brewed Cream Soda, which completely negates the smoky taste.

Median: This didn't really fit into the Pro's or Con's, but I thought it was worth mentioning.. The price on this particular candy bar is both good and bad, so it goes in the Median category, and it was about $3.19 for this little treat. That is a little pricey if your used to normal candy bars, but it kind of what you expect when buying a piece of gourmet chocolate.

Hey, if you liked this Food Blog idea, let me know, and I'll try to make it a more normal part of my blogs. biggrin Well, off to do stuff.

later,
-V2
