rain, nothing, sports and music (3-25-07)
Category: Life

Howdy everyone! Today is a nothing day. You know, the kind of day where I do absolutely nothing and it's everything I want it to be (to paraphrase Peter Gibbons). Although it wasn't perfect, I did make a 30 minute run to the store. It wasn't a large scale operation. I just grabbed juice, soda and a lotto ticket. I'd hardly call that doing something, so don't hold that against me.

I woke up in the late morning to the pitter patter sound of water against my windows. I love that sound. I'm one of those people who sleeps easy through thunderstorms and heavy rains. I love a thunderstorm at night. I remember when I was 7 years old and it would rain like crazy on a summer night. The lightning would light up the sky for 2 seconds. No one would be outside but me. I would go out on the porch and breathe in the rain soaked air and feel the mist of the water hitting the outside edge of my porch. It was always so refreshing to me. When I woke up to that sound today it put me in a comfortable place. It started off my day of doing nothing excellently. Here's a picture I took after the rain stopped:

Since I did nothing all day but surf the net, watch television, watch movies, watch the Sabres lose in Toronto and type I will tell about some other things I have going on in the near future.

Spring has sprung and to me that means many things. It means switching from my heavy duty ski jacket to some more stylish numbers. It means wearing sneakers all the time again. It means going for many more walks. It means breaking out the bike and learning how to roller blade this year to complement my learning how to ice skate these past few months. Most of all, it means sports!!!

In 3 weeks from today my football team begins its' season. Don't worry, it 6 on 6 coed touch football, so hopefully no one will get hurt or tackled. This is a league with 40 teams including ours and there are only 4 new teams this spring also including ours. So what this means is that we are a bunch of first timers who won't know the rules too well or what we are doing out there, especially during the first few games. I am a co-captain of the team and have been practicing my throwing so I can be the quarterback, but hopefully we will have a meet and greet practice soon to find out which people can play which positions. If someone else can throw better than I can, then I play tight end- no jokes please. I used to have and still have magic hands. If you aren't sure what that means, it means that I can catch the ball very well. My stamina is my weakness. I'm trying to get out and jog at least 4 times a week now until the season starts to help me improve my stamina a little but I am a big guy and I will never be confused with a track sprinter or distance runner.

So football starts in a few weeks and then a few weeks after that softball begins for me. I am going to do 2 softball teams for certain but hopefully I can talk some friends into fielding a third team. Having softball games 3 nights a week and football once a week would be a lot of fun and some damn good exercise. Add to that some occasional bike rides and hopefully some roller blading a few times a week and that will add up to a tired and happy Eddie.

The other big news is that I will be back on the FM dial in 3 weeks. As I've surely mentioned before, my old college radio station has an alumni weekend every April. I was a DJ from fall 96 to spring 2002 and ever since I've left Buffalo State and WBNY I've come back every year to relive the babbling and channel my inner music snob. I have my airshift already booked. I will be on the air for 120 minutes on Friday night April 13th from 10pm to midnight eastern time. I mention the timezone because unlike the last few years the station is streaming online so anyone in the world can tune in. So you can listen if you are a friend of mine in New York City, Canada, Sweden, Kentucky, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington, Florida or even here in Buffalo if you are out of the station's limited range. If you didn't know me back when I was a DJ you can check out the show and see what 6 years of radio sounds like with 5 years of rust on top.

The station's webcast page link is http://www.buffalostate.edu/wbny/webradio/ but of course I will repost that when we get close to airtime. Plus I'm still going to record the show so I will have a high quality copy of the program if anyone wants a CD of the show. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't listen live because who knows what will happen, I mean I meant to record the show the last 2 years but circumstances with equipment prevented this. This year I think I've solved this by buying an AM/FM CD/Cassette boombox that I will plug into the room and record the show on. I'm so excited about the show. I have worked out some stuff to play on the show like an intro and some small things to play in between blocks of songs. Plus there's the music selection. I mean, I will only have 2 hours!!! I probably own enough music to do a damn good 8 hour shift with no repeat artists. So I have so much listening to do to figure out what 20-30 tracks will make the cut. Well, time to go listen to some tracks. Thanks for reading and please tune in on your radio and computers to Crazy Eddie Time on April 13th!

I am doing guest spots around the country before I do the same thing on different continents later this year, hopefully generating enough revenue to open up my own shop next year =)
