I'm heading back to Colorado for a week in May. There was a SW deal that I couldn't say no to so I booked the flight a couple of days ago. Plan on spending May 2nd - 4th in Denver, then heading up to Fort Collins the 5th - 6th. Flying back to Seattle on the 7th. biggrin Can't wait!

Just finished watching "The New World" on HBO I wasn't entirely sure what I was getting into. As soon as I got a few minutes into it I remembered having seen the previews for it back in '05 but never remember it actually coming out in theaters. After reading up about it on IMDB looks like it didn't last in theaters for long b/c the director, Terrence Malick, pulled it and decided to re-edit it. Something he's known for doing. Same guy who directed The Thin Red Line.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

The movie was visually stunning and unfolds almost like your reading a poem. Very few of the characters are ever actually named and long stretches of the film are merely narrated as the thoughts of the 3 main characters. Christian Bale fits his character well, and the girl who plays Pocahontas does an amazing job (found it hard to believe she was only 14 when they filmed the movie). This might also mark the first time I've seen Colin Ferrell in a movie and didn't mind his performance.

However, I can't say I'd call it a great film. It certainly seemed to be missing something. It carries on like a great epic ... but the finished product is far from being an epic. It almost feels like it's unable to fill it's own shoes. It ends suddenly and I often found myself questioning the way it was edited together. I also found the music to be distracting as opposed to setting the scene. I'm not sure if the HBO version is the same as the theatrical release so I'd be curious to see if the director's alternate edit of the film is a better finished product.

Visually amazing but the story is lacking any substance - it felt hollow. I'd recommend watching the trailer and then skipping the actual movie.
