In my thinking, Jim Morrison is the first great american rockstar.
By rockstar I mean what we think of today when we hear the term rockstar: trashed, rowdy, rockin', artistic, and out of control.
Joplin was too earthy and folky
Hendrix was too flowery and hippie
but Morrison was angry, anti-establishment, sexy, tough, cool, fancied himself an artist and out of control.(and was wearing leather pants in the 60's.)
Sure elvis was a rocker, and there were plenty of other american rockers then, but to me, Morrison created the "rockstar" image we still have today.

I agree with you on the pure platform of over the top RAWKSTAR...no talent, tight trousers, cocksure atitude and bad poetry.....I think every young person goes through a Morrison stage...then you grow up and read the classics and turn your nose downwards at the fat pathetic slug....
