St. Valentine Day

We all have our own opinions on this particular day. In the group of friends that I have made over time it is mostly a negative day that only highlights that past disappointments and failures we all have suffered in the name of love. Even if love is blamed for a lot of choices that we make that turn out to be less than perfect it is that search for love that should be recognized as the most success evidence that we are living full and active lives as humans. We are all bound with the need to be social from our very blood to the highest of our ideals we all strive to find that perfect place of comfort, safety, excitement and wild passion. Only in the expression and exploration of love can we find and mix those contradictory things.

My suggestion is that we use this day that as far as I can tell is either Catholic or secular in its expression that we (pagans) should claim this day as our own and celebrate all the Goddess and Gods of love. We should do those rituals and acts that express love for ourselves, our close ones, the world and for all of life. Not just acts of passion and sex, not that I am knocking that, but also the simple acts of hugging and holding another person, pet, or stuff toy. If nothing else read and think about one of the great love stories from our history and take away a new understanding that the most desire thing in our lives is also the most complex.

Evidence says that humans get the most out of the hunt rather than the capture. Its all about the tease if we want to keep our brains happy. Now we need other things from each other, on going friendship, common interests, shared spiritual points of view to live long lives but the thrill of wanting or being wanted is so important to how we where made that to deny it makes us ill. Having innocent fun in flirting should be one of the rituals we as a culture cultivate. Suicide Girls is one of those outlets for me, it is the modern definition of "the flirt". I only hope that more of the men on this site realize that having fun flirting should not be put in the same expectation of making those longer and deeper connections. My only comment on this is that the harder you look for or try to push love into existence the less likely it is you well EVER find it.

Be at peace with yourself first, find contentment in looking in the mirror and seeing someone unique and above all else worthy of love, once we understand that is where all love springs from then each of us can go out in the world and hope to find another. Failure hurts but it also makes the moments when we are completely lost in love the closest we can come to being fully divine, never let fear stop you because if you love yourself then no one else's words will ever cut to deep.
