Mable! I used to have the same problem, but what I soon realized that using my finger left grease on the page and ultimately clumped the graphite together which could then ruin the picture, A q-tip will blend the tones effortlessly just rub it lightly in circular motions or against the shape of the face, also if you're doing a larger scale, fold some tissue a couple times and use that to blend an even tone! If you need any more tips feel free to ask.

Oh, and lean on another piece of paper over the top of your drawing to stop your hand smudging your hard work :)

I've just joined this site to really get a full selection of reference photos together. the one thing i'm going to be drawing this year will be suicide girls as that's how long my membership lasts.
