Ladytron,Manchester Academy,May 17th
I arrived at the Union in pretty knackered condition, having had a mere 3 hours sleep the previous night.My friend Flemo turned up a little later,in time to spot me nursing a cup of tea. We headed upstairs in time to hear the first bars of the Pipettes in Academy 2,who another mate of mine was supposed to be seeing but missed because he arrived too late.
Fortunately, the Academy 3 was respectably full (I wish it was still called the Hop and Grape)before the support arrived on stage. I believe they were called Art Snap,but could be wrong.Art Snap are an American four piece, very snappy dressers apart from the tranny on keyboards, who looked a little out of place. They reminded me a little of a harsher Franz Ferdinand,who have also supported Ladytron of course. They songs were punchy and energetic,with original structures, and very good.
Me and Andy managed to find my other mates-Tag, Sall, Mike Tauber and a collection of their friends, after Art Snap had finished.By this stage I was on Lemonade.
Ladytron arrived to a terrific reception of course;Mira still had short hair but added rather cute curly sideburns. This was really the only change in their style-they still have a stylish black modernist influenced look, although slightly softer than last time they played.I was expecting their newer songs to be rocky or poppy,but if anything the newer material was heavier electronically and meaner than their older songs.The girls still stood fiercely out front,almost ranting the songs. EVOL provided the main exception to their brutal delivery,Helen seems to love playing the pop star to this song and boogied almost seductively over the audience.
