London,Saturday 23 April-Camden, Death In June
Met my friend Mike at 2pm in Victoria Station at the Cafe nearest platform 15, and went straight on to Camden. Camden on Saturdays is chock full of all the teenagers in London, thus making walking down Camden High Street without being forced into the road impossible. This road must be a prime candidate for weekend pedestrianisation surely.
We eventually wandered into Bartok,a bar on Chalk Farm Road. Bartok has an electronica/ classical music policy which sounded great on paper, but the place could do with a change of colour scheme. In theory, modernist furniture and decoration is fine, but purple??!!
At 7pm we were safely installed in the trendy pub near the Slimelight, waiting for Death In June. A small party of teenage girls sang a completely tuneless rendition of "Happy Birthday" to a friend, but it has to be said, maybe they were better than a lot of goth vocalists.
Death In June were supported by the excellent Neavus, who sounded vaguely like an indie neo-folk(I think-I was somewhat the worse for wear) and dressed slightly similarly to Interpol.
Death In June were celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of their seminal "Nada" LP.Thus, Patrick Leagas performed vocal duties on at least half the tracks. His vocals were wonderful, clear and heartfelt;maybe even better than Doug Ps.Half the tracks had a "disco" feel(roughly half the tracks off Nada) which provided a lighter and welcome contrast to DIJs usual live fare. For these songs, Doug took a secondary role. Of course, the performance was very well received and Doug P was called back for two encores, during which he played requests from the audience.Having said on a number of previous occasions that he wasn't going to perform live again, maybe he is starting to enjoy himself!!!

Got hammered on Saturday night as usual and ended up at Smile - only ever a drunken last resort. Still a giggle though. Hope you had a good weekend mate, speak to ya soon.
P.S. Cheers for calling me a gentleman!
