London,Day 1,Thursday 21 April
The trip down on one of Virgins' Pendalino train was lovely. Two hours from Stockport to Manchester and the journey was as smooth as glass.
I stayed with an ex girlfriends'(and her boyfriend) in Hackney, in a tower block close to Islington.Didn't have much time to relax in Martins' company though, because I had to make my way to the Spreadeagle, off Kingsland Road (not far from Hoxton) for my friend Kris' DJ night. The Spreadeagle was entirely blacked out,but Kris was already in the pub with his girlfriend Toyah, and a few other mates (including a fellow DJ from Stretford). There was a screen playing excerpts from the bizarre 70s' sci-fi classic "Lost In Space",which brought back fond memories,of the robot in particular. No I didn't fancy it.
The set consisted of alternative music from 1970s(The Fall,Joy Division etc) through to modern times (LCD Soundsystem,Whitey) and all of it was brilliant. Shame there wasn't any Throbbing Gristle,Kris is a big fan,and you can't beat a nice bit of Throbbing Gristle.
Dacha, Kris Slovakian friend arrived, only twenty minutes late, which was a miracle. She talked about herself and her rich friends all evening which began to get on my wick after a while, but then I didn't say much anyway and without her contribution the conversation would probably have ground to a halt.
Still, the evening was damn good fun on the whole, and Kris' friends were a sound bunch with fine musical taste.OK the American barmaid didn't know what bitter was but then I suppose many people in England would probably be confused now as well.
