The Ramones Movie,"End of the Century"
is a standard rock documentary about a band who were anything but "standard".When the Ramones arrived on the scene in 1975, rock music was heading swiftly up its own backside-colossal amounts of drugs, stupendous amounts of equipment and tedious self indulgent guitar solos were boring fans to death-except the chin strokers.
The Ramones consisted of a Jewish geek (Joey Ramone), a heroin user who sold his arse for drugs(Dee Dee Ramone)a died in the wool Republican(Johnny Ramone) and,er,the drummer.Their songs were short (no more than three minutes) their lyrics hilarious and their live shows were staggering (I saw 'em in 1985 at Manchester Apollo and I have rarely witnessed anything so awesome). There are times when the "rock biog" style gets a bit boring, but the humour (Dee Dee Ramone in particular was bang on form),the music(plenty of live footage-the best being in front of their crazy Brazilian fans) and most of all the weirdness of the band make this movie well worth watching.
