The gun holster is suspended from the belt. In it rests a .38 caliber gun, the one commonly used by policemen. The belt has about a dozen loops for spare bullets. There is also a holder for the famous nippers or twisters. This is a foot long cable with a T-shaped handle at each end, used instead of handcuffs. It is placed around an arm or a leg of a prisoner, and the ends are twisted. A considerable amount of painful pressure restrains any person who may wish to escape.

Some policemen have another device for "persuading" a prisoner to come along. It is called an iron claw and is a form of handcuff for one hand. The handle can be turned, inflicting much pressure on the prisoner's arm. In emergencies it can serve as a tourniquet to stop bleeding.

On the right trouser leg, between the hip and knee there is a narrow tubular pocket in which a billy is carried. This is a short club made of heavy rubber or braided leather, containing lead shot. It is usually not used as a club. Instead, it is gripped in the center by the hand and struck sideways, usually in the ribs. In case of a fist fight it adds extra momentum to the closed fist.
