Sometimes poetry is the only thing that can make me feel a little better. Brandon gave me this book a while back as a gift. It is VERY old. 1926 to be exact. But some of the writing just makes so much sense and hits a nerve. So I am going to post some of the poetry that has gotten me through some extrememly difficult moments. Maybe it will come in handy to someone else someday
A VERY SHORT SONG:
Once, when I was young and true,
Someone left me sad-
Broke my brittle heart in two;
And that is very bad.
Love is for unlucky folk,
Love is but a curse.
Once there was a heart I broke;
And that, I think, is worse.
UNFORTUNATE COINCIDENCE:
By the time you swear you're his,
Shivering and sighing.
And he vows his passion is
Infinite, undying-
Lady, make a note of this:
One of you is lying.
RESUME:
Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Gun's aren't lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.
GODSPEED:
Oh, seek, my love, your newer way;
I'll not be left in sorrow.
So long as I have yesterday,
Go take your damned tomorrow!
MEN:
They hail you as their morning star
Because you are the way you are.
If you return the sentiment,
They'll try to make you differant;
And once they have you, safe and sound,
They want to change you all around.
Your moods and ways they put a curse on;
They'd make of you another person.
They cannot let you go your gait;
They influence and educate.
They'd alter all that they admired.
They make me sick, they make me tired.
NEWS ITEM:
Men seldom make passes
At girls who wear glasses.
EXPERIENCE:
Some men break your heart in two,
Some men fawn and flatter,
Some men never look at you;
And that cleans up the matter.
MORTAL ENEMY:
Let another cross his way-
She's the one will do the weeping!
Little need I fear he'll stray
Since I have his heart in keeping.
Let another hail him dear-
Little chance that he'll forget me!
Only need I curse and fear
Her he loved before he met me.
SUPERFLUOUS ADVICE:
Should they whisper false of you,
Never trouble to deny;
Should the words they say be true,
Weep and storm and swear they lie.
BUT NOT FORGOTTEN:
I think, no matter where you stray,
That I shall go with you a way.
Though you may wander sweeter lands,
You will not soon forget my hands,
Nor yet the way I held my head,
Nor all the tremulous things i said.
You still will see me, small and white
And smiling, in the secret night,
And feel my arms about you when
The day comes fluttering back again.
I think, no matter where you be,
You'll hold me in your memory
And keep my image, there without me,
By telling later loves about me.
*SIGH* I think I need to sleep so I can stop thinking.
