There's a local theater here called the Flat Rock Playhouse. It's the official state theater of North Carolina, and it produces Broadway-caliber plays. (Seriously, people from Broadway come down to this little podunk town. Right now, the choreographer from Spiderman: Turn off the Dark is doing the Nutcracker, last month a famous director was doing Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, 2 months ago a whole team was here for Zelda: An American Love Story. Not to mention all the actors, writers, lighting designers, etc.) The theater also houses a Youth Theater, which has spawned many Broadway-bound actors, musicians, writers, etc. (including the aforementioned choreographer).

However, it was recently announced that after over 60 years, the theater may have to close. Even though it is a purely non-profit and contributes nearly $15million a year to the local economy, it is run purely on donations, and the donations have dropped off. This may be its last season unless it can raise at least $250,000 by the end of the year.

So I'm trying to spread the word. I know you may not care because it's not in YOUR town, but it is the most culturally important thing around. This ain't no run of the mill amateur theater.

Please help me spread the word.

A news story explaining it all.

You can donate directly here. (And of course it's tax deductible!)

In addition, every dollar I make from my Etsy store will go directly to the Playhouse.

And here's a Facebook group set up to get details on progress and hear people's personal stories.

Thanks friends.

I'll see if I can chip in. Maybe they can convince the General Assembly to offer more support...?

  • The Playhouse exists 80% from box office revenues; the national average is significantly lower.

  • While state support covers 2% of operation, donors like you cover 6.5%.

(hmmm... 11.5% seems to be missing)
