Looking at the books you suggested in the "must read" thread...you might want to read "Of Human Bondage" by W Somerset Maugham. It's also about a young man with a deformity and it runs along the course of his life. It's excellent reading.
This morning I went to the bookstore to get the latest edition of the Lonely Planet's shoestring guide to Southeast Asia. The idea of living by myself for months on end in an unfamiliar land surrounded by jungle and beach and people who have little in common with me sounds very appealing.
