MENOMONIE, Wis. (AP) - A farmer accused of offering a hay baler to have someone kill another man because he had a romantic interest in the other man's girlfriend will stand trial.
Daniel J. Lemon, 40, of rural Boyceville, was charged with first-degree attempted ntentional homicide for solicitation of murder.
An undercover agent with Eau Claire police testified at Monday's preliminary hearing in Dunn County that he contacted Lemon after a jail informant told the county sheriff's department that Lemon wanted to have Andrew Dean killed.
The agent said the two met at a Menomonie restaurant, and Lemon told the agent he wanted Dean crippled or to have no memory.
Lemon finally told the officer he wanted Dean "put out of his misery," the agent said.
Lemon offered the agent a hay baler because he had been told the agent was planning to start a hobby farm.
The two agreed Lemon would pay $2,500 for the deed, the agent said. Lemon allegedly gave the agent a handgun as collateral for hiring him.
Lemon also allegedly told the agent to give Dean "a dirt grave" at one point.
During cross-examination, the agent said he called Dean first and the word "kill" never was used.
Lemon was in the Dunn County jail on a $300,000 bond Tuesday. He was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday.
