First Law

She stood me up! her eyes disappear
at dusk. She had elegant gowns
no twentysomething could afford, but
when she wears those striped socks, I am a Roman
crafting his meagre verses boxed in
by the barbarians; some bloody saxon'll
wipe his carcass with my manuscript: germs
descending to burbles in the burp of a sparrow
from Portugal two millenia hence.

Second Law

Spoiled myself on television finales, I remain
viscous and go home for a few days to say goodbye
again. Its wrong to call you from the coast,
you won't follow: we lose touch;
sharing letters, postcards, and finally
myspace comments. I forget you occupied my space;
the image I have of you smoking outside Kinko's
is streaked with toner and too dark.

Third Law

Stars stuffed my rib cage, five times its normal size.
Lying in her bed; rattlers wrestling in the rafters.
Use a jelly soap with quarried stones,
douse my smoky uniform in Febreeze,
share a final Folger's and a kiss in the frost.
