"I recently picked up a book about numerology and such, and while reading over it (and listening to APC) it occurred to me that all APC albums have twelve songs, each of them in line with the basic symbolism of the numbers one through twelve.
This would also explain the full meaning of Thirteenth Step in terms of why the album was named, how it can be interpreted numerologically, and allow for other applications of what thirteen could mean/evoke.
Here's a basic description of the significance and symbolism of each of the numbers from one to twelve:
1 - the humble origin of each individual, feeling the impulse of existence and volunteering to take the first step.
2 - immediately after the first step there is duality, separation and hunger; the desire that becomes a spiritual longing and will empower the full circle of the journey.
3 - development of personality and enchantment with things we meet on the way; also the capacity for positive action and the efforts to be a hero.
4 - moments of awakening to Soul; becoming a chooser.
5 - tranformation; learning through reversals and the paradox of language.
6 - being met by the grace of intuition; suspense, vigilance, and carefree responsiveness.
7 - the mantle of understanding enwraps you giving the elevated view from where forgiveness is natural.
8 - the healing of dying into deathlessness; not drowning but swimming in the ocean of infinity.
9 - arriving home, the unborn essence, peace of the shore beyond
- I lay me down.
10 - a natural and self-illuminating radiance; all light, all bright, glory and transcendent bliss.
11 - the communion of big I and little i (10 + 1); twins with God.
12 - the cycle repeats in its echo; you reflect it everywhere through all times."
He also said that the number 13 is the link between the numbers 12 and 1 so it's the completion of they cycle.............I think this is interesting, but not necessarily what APC was going for. I've also heard that the title of the album came from drug rehabilitation aka the 12 step program.........But everything should be up for each individual's interpretation. Otherwise art has failed. (for those of you who don't know.....i think all aspects of art...music included....exists to make people think for themselves and create for themselves......it also serves as great therapy
