In my more despicable days on this earth(two years ago), waking up in a slightly unfamiliar bedroom was nothing new and when Im honest with myself this morning was a welcome remembered sensation. I looked over at the tangled combination of skin and bed covers lying next to me and pondered whether sneaking out is either appropriate or even possible. I also checked to see how badly the rum and cokes had impaired my judgment from the night before.
The night before she had an amazing laugh and said that she slung trendy espresso drinks at the knock off Starbucks by the mall. She feigned enough interest in my stories of preproduction woes to let me ask her if shed like another drink. We were both there trying to escape the torturous formality that family gatherings often inspire this time of year and ended up at the same party thrown by a distant acquaintance. We both lied and said that we'd never done this kind of thing before as we struggled out of clothes and into her bed, but rationalized that its New Years and the time to act on impulse. We have the rest of the year to regret, but for that brief night we didnt worry if it will all work out.
She woke up by the time I located my pants so I asked if she felt like grabbing breakfast. She had a cigarette in her mouth and mumbled something about the coffee maker.
Twenty minutes later, we had exchanged numbers and I left for breakfast without her. I guess neither of us seemed as interesting the next morning; but maybe thats because we were dancing around the subject of what this was exactly, a drunken one night stand or the beginning of something else.
On the professional side of things, the show went off without a hitch. Well we forgot to bring the equipment for the announce team to do the live play by play and commentary, but we can just do that in post.
The crowd was insane and definitely into the show from beginning to end. Even the battle royal turned out well and its surprise ending threw everyone. The main event was phenomenal, but the boys were down because an older, more experienced guy came and watched the show and was highly critical. He made some good points about them needing to work on match psychology and I learned so much by just sitting back and listening as he instructed his students, but he brought down that entire group when they should have been on an unbelievable high. I felt for them and wanted to say something but Im on the production side of things and it wasnt my place to contradict so esteemed a guest.
However, between us (and this is what those in the business call a shoot) the guy was just jealous that he could never do in the prime of his career what these guys are doing now at the beginning of theirs. He looked at them and saw his own frustrations with his now stagnant career, clearly on the decline, and shit on them to make himself feel better.

"I was there once so I know everything, forgetting that in his prime, he couldnt draw flies if they chopped off his head and dipped him in shit.

His comments, while quite valid, were short-sided and hadnt taken into account other factors like over all storylines that couldnt be ignored for the sake of this one show. His criticism of certain aspects of matches wasnt completely valid because it would have screwed up the next four months of television. over the past few months weve been making a concerted effort to improve the actual storytelling aspect of the television program because were trying to transition from regional show with a cult following to a national program with an ever-expanding audience.
Still, Im excited about what this year will bring. I see more opportunities in my life than last year am actually optimistic.
