The Joy of August... Summer nearing its end... Our youth is headed to college. Parents digging deep into their savings to make their childrens freshman experience less stressful and painless. New boom-boxes, small refrigerators, twin size bed sheets, new towels, lamps and lap-tops all fly out of the shelves in stores to accommodate our future Einsteins. For those of you going to college for the first time and for those of you who for the first time are headed to a dorm, I say - God Bless and stay healthy... Recently; it is more dangerous to live in college dorms than it is to walk in the dead of night through a housing project in a large city in the USA. Yes, the amount of conscience altering substance and health risks present and available to our young people in colleges has shocked the social researchers.... Almost 2000 college undergrads died last year in binge drinking related incidents. More than the number of U.S. soldiers killed in battle in Iraq.
The future of this country depends on the clear minds and stability of our youth... But, with individuals like Pat Robertson on the loose, asking our government to assassinate the President of Venezuela; he is even a greater danger to our youth, security and future stability in our hemisphere than the colleges in our country. Pat Robertson, the holy, Christian leader of the 700 Club and advisor too many our politicians and author of the right-wing religious manifesto, said; I think we really ought to go ahead and do it, when referring to President Chavez's statement that USA backed anti-Chavez individuals are trying to assassinate him. Statements like that not only can cause a war, but are the seeds to negative views that later become the basis for our foreign policies, like the Cuban Embargo that is now almost 50 years old and has proven useless and are impossible to correct in the years to come. Pat Robertson, calling Chavez a dictator and someone creating a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism is - if not the most dangerous statement made this year, it has to be illegal and he should be reprimanded or at least sanctioned for creating a security risk in our country.
This is why this is so dangerous: A guy like Pat Robertson who is listened to by millions of Americans takes advantage that Americans do not read and yet believe all the news coming from the mainstream media as bible truth, including the 700 Club news report. President Chavez has been elected three times by Venezuelans in democratically held elections supervised by Americans and an international commission. Robertson points to an overthrow of Chavez a few years ago, but does not tell his listeners that the U. S. State Department sponsored the right-wing coup that lasted only 48 hours; then the majority of Venezuelans returned their elected President to power ending the coup. Any statement that includes the words, communist and Muslim extremist is enough to generate hate, dislike and approval for war in the USA. Pat Robertsons words will generate just that toward Venezuela, who poses no threat to the USA, and is not a communist country, (there are no communist countries in our hemisphere and few in the world,) and there maybe a handful of Muslims in Venezuela in the mist of 25 million people of which over 96% are Catholic and 3% protestant. Making a statement like that will create assumptions in the minds of our honest, God fearing citizens. These same people who innocently listen to Rev. Robertson, a man of God, and seek answers to their basic simple prayers to live simple descent lives. Now these people are fed the news and idea that Venezuela poses a security risk and we must not only invade the country but send the CIA to assassinate their President. How un-American, how un-democratic, how-unjust, how dangerous and how do we permit Pat Robertson to get away with this.
As August comes to an end, and September is around the corner. Know that winter is near, and the heating bill you had last year is now going to be 45% higher. Know also there is no reason for this other than the super-wealthy energy companies supported by our government and politicians, are the ones who just want to make more money and will raise the price you will end up paying. Also, know that there is no reason for you to pay over $3.00 a gallon of gas, which was $0.25 cents a gallon in 1960. Know that we still have the same refineries, the same pipe-lines and the process of making gas and getting it to you has not only gotten cheaper, but it is more efficient and faster. Yet, know that about 70% of our gasoline comes from oil that comes from Venezuela. And Cuba has discovered oil deposits that will make that island nation self-sufficient in 7 years. And historically, our political and military leaders do not like countries that can operate and function without USA, influence, control and support. Cuba is only 90 miles away and Venezuela is not far from that. Pat Robertson claims theses countries, Cuba and Venezuela are the ones we should send a nuclear bomb too and assassinate their President. Why do you think he says that???? This is the same guy, Rev. Robertson, who runs for President in the USA and could potentially win if you do not register and vote!!!!!!!
In closing: We must stop interfering with the political growth and development of our neighboring countries. We must create a safe hemisphere by permitting countries to eliminate poverty, increase educational levels, and develop infrastructures for health, transportation and communication. This way we change our image as an imperialist, selfish and abusive government. We the people, the American people; are not what our government leaders and people like Pat Robertson preach.
